Abstract

592,901. Chucks. WOODWORTH CO., N. A. June 5, 1945, No. 14102. Convention date, Nov. 11, 1944. [Class 83 (iii)] A diaphragm chuck is provided with means secured to one side of the diaphragm to counteract the effect of centrifugal force on the workgripping jaws &c. carried on the other face, the assembly being mounted on a plate on the chuck body. The diaphragm 12, thicker at the centre than at the outer edge, is dished to fit over the locating-spigot of a plate 10 to which it is secured by threaded taper-pins, the plate being concentrically mounted on the body 16 by means of screws 14. The jaws 26 are adjustably mounted by screws 30 each engaging a plate 36 on the other side of the diaphragm; also passing through each plate 36 and the diaphragm is a threaded member 40 with a holding nut 44 and a set-screw 50 forming an abutment for the jaw. Distortion of the diaphragm to open the jaws is effected by a rod 62 which engages a cup-shaped member 58 engaging the inner edge of the diaphragm. A cover 90 encloses the jaws &c. and a work stop comprises a screw 66 carried by the member 58. Alternatively, a strap is fixed to the rear of the plate 10 and carries a similar screw.
