Abstract
592,598. Electrodes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and BARLOW, K. F. Feb. 25, 1946, No. 4699/45. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXII] In a resistance heating electrode having an axially extending hole the bottom of which forms a cooling surface behind the contact surface and the hole containing an axially slidable tube for directing a flow of cooling fluid on to the cooling surface which fluid is subsequently discharged in the opposite direction through an annular clearance space, the tube is spring-pressed towards the cooling surface and has at least one projecting lug arranged to engage a part of the electrode to determine the axial space between the cooling surface and the end of the tube. The electrode 1, which is held in a holder 3 has a tip 2 secured thereto the internal cooling surface 4 of which is shaped to merge smoothly into the interior wall 5 of the electrode and has an inwardly projecting central pipe 6 merging in all directions into the cooling surface which is thus of annular trough-like shape. The inlet pipe 7 is provided with a spring-pressed extension 8 with a rounded edge 10 at the end and with small lugs 11 bearing against the cooling surface. The area of the annular space is larger than that of the extension 8 so as to prevent impeding of the flow of cooling fluid.
