592,341. Severing adhesive tapes. COW & GATE, Ltd., and CHARLES, G. K. May 22, 1945, No. 12763. [Class 73] [Also in Group VIII] A tape-severing device for use in a can-taping machine, e.g., such as is described in Specification 574,156, consists of an electrical resistance wire 8 extending across the end of an arm 2 between insulated spring metal blades 6, 7. A low voltage supply is connected to the wire 8 so that it is heated to incandescence. A needle 9 is inserted in the arm 2 adjacent the wire 8 so that its point projects beyond the wire, and the tape is held on the needle until it is severed. The arm 2 is supported on a bar 1 having a slot 21 for the reception of a clamping screw 11 by which the device is attached to a stationary part of the machine. The arm 2 is fulcrummed on a bolt 3 at the end of the bar 1. A bracket 14 fixed to the bar 1 has two adjusting screws 4, 15 which form stops to limit the pivotal movement of the arm 2. A spring 5 returns the arm 2 to its initial position against the stop 4, after having yielded under the pressure of the tape during the severing process.
