Abstract
592,171. Pressure gauges. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S., (formerly SMITH & SONS (MOTOR ACCESSORIES), Ltd., S.), and RILEY, J. April 11, 1944, No. 6670. [Class 106 (ii)] Means comprising a responsive element displaceable by the application of a varying control force, and yielding means associated therewith to apply a balancing force, comprises also a permanent magnet which applies a force to the responsive element proportional to the strength of its magnetic field, displacement of the responsive element being arranged to vary the strength of the field. In one embodiment, a permanent magnet 22 secured to one diaphragm of a capsule 10 co-operates with a similarlyshaped armature 24 secured to the other diaphragm. In an application to a rate-ofclimb indicator (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown), an armature is mounted on an arm in the linkage between the pressure capsule and the indicator so that the armature moves between the poles of a U-shaped magnet, transversely across the field. A somewhat similar arrangement is adopted in an application to an air-speed indicator (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). In this embodiment, a soft iron adjusting screw forms one pole of the magnet and other adjusting means are mentioned.
