Abstract

591,807. Coating surfaces with metals. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). June 28, 1944, No. 12277. [Class 82 (ii)] A method of coating a vitreous surface consists in vacuum-depositing in consecutive layers beryllium and a second metal, or beryllium an alloy of beryllium and a second metal and finally the second metal, which alloy may be deposited in such varying proportions as to form an alloy layer progressively richer in the second metal as the thickness thereof increases. Details are given of a method used when aluminium is the second metal, and reference is made to Ag, Au and Ni in this respect. The composite film may be treated with a polar compound capable of reacting with the film to form a hydrophobic layer thereon, or a layer of a water-insoluble metal fluoride may be vapour-deposited thereon. The latter may be a layer of magnesium fluoride, which may be treated to form a hydrophobic layer with a polar compound, which may be a material selected from the class consisting of long chain fatty acids and the soluble (e.g. alkali) metal salts thereof.
