A metal, e.g. steel or Ni-base alloy, surface is coated by applying a composition comprising a phosphate glue, Al powder, which is at least 50% of the composition, and a buffering agent e.g. chromic acid or potassium dichromate and then heating at 500 to 1000‹C, for ¢ to 8 hours in air or an inert gas. The phosphate glue may comprise phospheric acid, aluminium phosphate and water.
