Abstract
1396020 Welding by pressure; welding by fusion ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AB 14 Sept 1972 [15 Sept 1971] 42682/72 Heading B3R [Also in Division C7] The cores of two wires having a core of Al and a casing of Cu are joined end-to-end to provide a homogeneous transition from one core to the other, and the joint is coated, by sputtering, with Cu or another malleable metal such as Ag or Au. Typically, two wires are stripped of the Cu casing near the ends, the casing being tapered gradually to zero thickness, and the ends are joined by cold pressure welding although friction welding or electron beam welding may be employed; the burr so formed is removed to reduce the wire to its original (coated) diameter, and a Cu layer is applied by sputtering; the wire may have diameter 8 mm. ; the casing a thickness of 0À3 mm., and the sputtered layer may be 0À1-100 Á thick. Prior to coating, the joint and target may be presputtered using an interposed movable shield; during sputtering (in argon) the wire joint is rotated about the axis of the wire.
