Abstract

1328772 Soldering PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Jan 1972 [29 Jan 1971] 3626/72 Heading B3R A method of securing a window 6 in an electric discharge tube 10 comprises precoating the joint surfaces of the windows and of a frame member 1 which forms or will form part of the tube, with a metal adapted to alloy with the soldering material, providing the soldering material between the surfaces and heating under vacuum to degas the tube, the pressures on either side of the window being the same during the heating operation and the soldering material having a melting point lower than the temperature reached during the heating operation. The frame member 1 may be of nickel-cobalt-iron alloy, the windows 6 of magnesium fluoride, the coating metal gold, the soldering material indium and the firing temperature 300‹ C. The soldering material may be provided in the form of a ring of wire placed in an annular groove 4 in a shoulder 5 of the frame, the wire being of the same diameter as the groove section. The frame has an outer annular V-section formation 2 and to complete the vacuum sealing of the tube the part 2 may be pressed into an indiumfilled V-section groove 12 of a sleeve 7 attached to the discharge tube envelope. Alternatively the part 2 and groove 12 may be gold plated and soldered with indium provided in the groove. The tube may be a photo-multiplier tube provided with a bi- or trialkali photocathode. Alternative embodiments of the frame member are described (Figs. 2, 3, not shown).
