Abstract

Vulcanized rubber is reclaimed by heating it in a finely divided condition in the presence of a small proportion of polycarbocyclic phenolic or amine bodies to 140-170 DEG C. in an autoclave in the presence of a restricted amount of oxygen, and thereafter treating the rubber mechanically to obtain a coherent mess. The quantity of oxygen must vary between the equivalent of 0 and 20 c.c. of air per gram of rubber hydrocarbon, the proportion approaching the lower limit in the case of rubber substantially free from filling material, rising to the maximum when the filler constitutes approximately 50 per cent. of the rubber. About 2-5 per cent. of the polycyclic body which may be a - or b -naphthol; a - or b -naphthylamine; or condensation products of such amines with aldols or aldehydes is incorporated in the rubber and the mix heated for 1-3 hours. It may be worked as a Banbury type mixed before treatment on a rubber mill. Specification 571,603 is referred to in the first and second Provisional Specifications.
