Abstract

Vulcanised rubber is reclaimed by heating to 140-170 DEG C., preferably 150-170 DEG C., in the presence of a restricted proportion of oxygen varying between a proportion equivalent to 0cc. to 20cc. of air per gram of gum rubber, the proportion of oxygen approaching the lower limit in the case of rubber substantially free from filling material and the upper limit in the case of rubber having a high content of reinforcing material, and in the presence of a polycyclic secondary amine, preferably one containing a naphthalene nucleus, the rubber being thereafter sheeted or mechanically treated in a roller mill with or without prior treatment in a refiner or other machine. The amine may be methyl, ethyl, phenyl or aldol naphthylamine or acetaldehyde ae-naphthylamine. The process is not applicable to red vulcanised rubber containing a substantial proportion of antimony sulphide.
