Abstract

591,555. Turbines. SHOLL, W. S. March 19, 1945, No. 6819. [Class 110 (iii)] In a free jet impulse turbine operated by a single jet, the jet of working fluid may be directed on to the rotor so as to cause it to rotate in the forward or reverse direction or to produce a retarding effect on the rotor. In the arrangement shown, Fig. 1, the nozzle f which directs the working fluid on to the rotor is mounted on pivot h. The pivot h, which allows the jet to swing so as to produce the forward, reverse or braking effect, may also form the stop-cock. The pivot h may be - dispensed with and the jet itself made flexible or a fixed jet may be mounted on a flexible diaphragm of metal, leather or rubber. In another modification, three jets are employed mounted on a stop cock which allows the working fluid to be supplied to one only at a time. In a further modification, each of the three jets has a separate stopcock which are interconnected to prevent operation of more than one at a time. Special blades e to assist the retarding effect of the jet may be used. The working fluid may be air, gas, steam or water. The casing a may be made of pressed or die cast metal or from plastic moulded material, and may be used to support the driven machine.
