Abstract
667,129. Hydraulic turbines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. June 23, 1950. [July 22, 1949] No. 19366/49. Class 110(iii). In a pelton wheel having at least one stationary guide vane arranged adjacent the bucket wheel in the range where the water from the jet or jets leaves the buckets of the wheel, the leading edge of the vane has a contour substantially parallel to the outlet edge of the buckets and is so directed as to allow a smooth entry of the water leaving the buckets and the vane is so curved as to lead the water gradually away from the wheel. A pelton wheel with a vertical shaft 5 operated by two jets J<SP>1</SP>, J<SP>2</SP>, has stationary guide vanes 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> provided above the buckets 2 to prevent the discharge water falling back on to the wheel. The vanes 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP>, which have a leading edge substantially parallel to the outlet edge of the buckets are adapted to allow a smooth entry of the water leaving the buckets with an absolute velocity C and to guide the water gradually away from the bucket wheel in the direction of the arrow D. More than one vane per jet may be provided and vanes may be provided on both sides of the wheel.
