Abstract
590,747. Moulding commutator parts. NELCO, Ltd., and FROUD, R. G. April 6, 1945, No. 8600. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXV] A pair of commutators, one surrounding the other, are moulded on to a common core by the use of a cylindrical mould, the insulation between segments comprising mica or like material placed in position before the moulding operation. As shown, a steel tube a has a bottom plug c surrounding the central spigot n on which is fitted a central core j which is knurled and has radial keying holes to grip the thermosetting moulded material. A ring e holds the previously assembled inner commutator segments, and a further ring g similarly locates the outer commutator f, which may have steel strengthening rings r. When a third ring h has been set in place, a predetermined quantity of moulding powder is placed in the mould and compressed, whilst hot, by means of a plug k. In a modification, the plug c may be recessed to receive a slip-ring also moulded to the commutator assembly. All the mould parts are highly polished and grooves o assist in the extraction of the rings.
