Abstract

590,175. Controlling vehicles. SOMMER, A. H., CECIL, A. R. G., and WICKHAM & CO., Ltd., D. June 26, 1944, No. 12146. [Class 79 (v)] [Also in Groups XXVIII, XXIX and XXXVIII] A master controller K is arranged to supply fluid under pressure to three or more cylinders A, B, C, each having a piston loaded by a spring E. The piston rod F is connected to a lever G and rod F<1> to a slot formed in the lever G. The lever G and the piston rod F<2> are connected by links G<2>, G<4> to a lever G' connected to the mechanism H to be controlled. When'supplied with fluid under pressure, each piston makes a full stroke and the pistons may be energised singly or, in any combination and with the arrangement of the links shown, eight positions of the mechanism H can be obtained. The pistons may be replaced by diaphragms or solenoids. The control system may be applied to the control of several units of railway vehicles under a master control and the working fluid may be compressed air or vacuum of a brake system when in the event of failure of the pressure, all the pistons would be returned by the springs and the controlled units H set to stop the prime movers.
