Abstract

590,173. Magnetic separators. SIMMS MOTOR UNITS, Ltd., and BRYAN, W. April 21, 1944, No. 7460. [Class 72] [Also in Group XXXV] A magnetic cleaner for liquids, particularly for removing iron &c. from the oil in a gear box or sump of an engine &c. comprises a permanent magnet in the form of a one-piece casting or sintered moulding of an iron alloy known under the name "Alnico," or two or more such magnets in combination with fixing means consisting of a screw plug carrying the magnet &c. which screws into a tapped hole in the wall of the gear box &c., or a plate carrying the magnet &c. which is screwed or bolted over an opening in the wall or a removable bung carrying the magnets which has a force fit in the hole in the casing. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the two poles 8, 9 of the magnet 2 are of tapering form and are connected by a web 10 abreast of flutings 11 forming crevices for the collection of the magnetic material, the base 5 of the magnet fitting the screwed portion 3 of the plug 1 provided with a head portion 4. A name plate 12 may be fitted to the portion 4 by rivets 13. In another form a four pole magnet is fitted in the plug with web portions extending between each pair of poles leaving flutings such as 11 for the collection of the magnetic material.
