Abstract

589,881. Coating metals; alloys. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. Feb. 8, 1945, No. 3221. Convention date, Oct. 18, 1944. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] In a method of oxidising chrome-nickel-steel parts, the parts are subjected in successive stages to an atmosphere of wet hydrogen, the first stage being at a low temperature, and the second at a temperature above 1,600‹F. but below the melting point of the chrome-nickelsteel. As shown, chrome-nickel electrodes for an electronic valve loaded in trays 17 are introduced into a furnace 10 which is supplied with hydrogen saturated with water vapour at 80- 100‹F. from a tank 27. In position 1, the tray is subjected for one minute to a rapid flow of wet hydrogen to remove all air or oxygen adherent to the electrodes ; in position 2 the temperature is increased to 2,300‹F. to form the oxide skin, and in positions 3, 4 and 5 the parts are cooled to 100 to 200‹ F. A thin tenacious oxide skin is said to be formed on the electrodes and this skin enables a good tight joint to be formed between glass and the electrode. An alloy consisting of 42 per cent. nickel, 5 to 8 per cent. chromium, .02 to 2 per cent. aluminium, the balance iron is referred to.
