[Class 81 (ii)] Apparatus for generating infra-red and ultraviolet rays, wherein both generating units are .arranged within the same reflector, comprises a reflector 1, Fig. 1, in which the infra-red unit is in the form of a ring 4 co-axial with and at right angles to the axis of the reflector, and in which the ultra-violet unit comprises a mercury discharge unit 6 situated in front of the infra-red unit and curved and arranged substantially coaxial with, and in a plane at right angles to, the axis of the reflector, both units facing forwardly to give maximum direct emission through the mouth of the reflector. Ring 4, comprising a nickel-chrome wire on or embedded in its front face is attached to the flat back part 1a of stepped reflector 1 by phosphor-bronze clip 5, and the leads therefrom pass through insulated terminals 12. The electrode chambers 6a of the circular mercury unit 6 are held by phosphorbronze clips 7 attached to rod 8 fixed to the back of the reflector. Steel casing 2 is provided to protect the leads, and the whole apparatus may be mounted by a hinged joint 11, Fig 5, on a stand 10. The infra-red unit may operate at normal mains voltage and the ultra-violet unit at 350 volts through a transformer 9, and each unit is arranged to work independently of the other, if desired. The reflector surface may be nickel-plated and then gold-plated. A pilot lamp may be provided to indicate when the infra-red unit is in use, and this may be in the form of a divided ring of carbon graphite.
