[Classes 20 (iv) and 87 (i)] Prefabricated wall constructions designed in accordance with the "shutter principle,' in which wall panels are securely held in upper and lower sockets so dimensioned that the panel is first inserted in the upper socket and then lowered into the lower socket, have panels of hollow box construction in which free members are attached to an intermediate rigid framework, and which are formed along the vertical edges thereof with projections and recesses comprising respectively a portion of the framework or of the face members projecting respectively beyond the edges of the face members or the edge of the framework, said panels snugly interfitting one another in the assembled wall and being slidable along the sockets to their final positions therein. As shown in Figs. 1 and 7, the panels comprise two face members 7 and 8 secured to an intervening rigid framework 9 extending along the four edges of the panel with the upper edges of the members 7 and 8 flush with the framework 9 and with vertical edges, as shown in Fig. 4, either arranged to form a recess 11 in which the sheets 7 and 8 stand proud of the framework or to form a projection 12 in which the sheets are set back from the framework, the projections and recesses extending the full length of the panel. Thermal insulation 10 may be incorporated within the panels. As applied to the inner wall of a double thickness wall in which the outer wall is of brick, e.g., Fig. 1, the lower edges of the panels are received in a boxing placed against the inner face of the stanchions 4 and comprising vertical strips 13 and 14 and a horizontal strip 15 arranged to form the lower socket of the wall and providing a compartment 16 for service elements 17. The upper socket, in which the upper edges of the panels are received, is formed by a sheet metal pressing 19 of inverted U-shape secured to the joist 5 and having an outwardly directed flanges 20 providing support for ceiling panels 21. Modification of sockets for partition walls, panels below window and panels above doors are described. The panels may incorporate electrical heating elements, for example as described in Specification 589,752, [Group XI].
