589,743. Grinding twist drills. STIRLING, E. M. March 29, 1945, No. 8019. [Class 60] In a machine for grinding twist drills in which the drill, as it is given a rotary feed relative to the grinder, is displaced axially by cam means, the cam means comprise a pair of relatively rotatable elements having coacting cam faces, each element having a pair of diametrically disposed similar cam faces separated by quickreturn faces, whereby, by a complete rotation of one element relatively to the other, both edges of the drill will be treated. A main frame 1, with an extension 2 to support a grinding attachment, is formed with a longitudinal slot 9 in which an auxiliary frame 10 is slidably adjustable by a feed screw 6. Threaded in an arm 10a of the frame 10 is a sleeve 14, lockable relative to the frame by a wing nut 16, housing a spindle 13 having at one end'a a chuck 12 and at its other end a hand wheel 15. A collar 19, fixed on the sleeve 14, has a pair of cam faces 21 coating with similar opposed cam faces 22 on a collar 20 on the spindle 13, each pair of cam faces being separated by a quick-return face, so that, during one revolution of the spindle, it and the chuck are twice fed forward axially against the action of a spring 18 so as to grind both cutting edges. A stud 24 engages a drill fluting to ascertain the correct setting position.
