[Class 60] A device for relieving the backs of the teeth of a milling-cutter &c. comprises a shaft adapted to be rotated slowly, and journalled in a body pivoted on a base to carry the cutter &c. towards and from a grinding-wheel or other cutting tool by means of a formed cam driven in timed relation with the shaft. The device comprises a base 12 having pivoted thereon, by means of a pin 17, a body 16, the ends of the pin being carried in bosses 18a, 18b on the base; the body 16 is pressed axially of the pin 17 by a spring 20 and carries a pin 23 engaging a plate 24, pivoted at 25 on the boss 18a and adjustable angularly about the pivot by a screw 26. The upper portion 29 of the body 16 has journalled therein a spindle 30 to receive the cutter &c., the spindle also carrying a hand wheel 31 by which it may be rotated slowly, and a gear 32, which drives, through an idler gear 33 a gear 34 on a shaft 35 carrying a cam 36. The shaft 35 is carried by a bracket 38 secured to the portion 29 and having an arm 41 carrying an adjustable bracket 42 on which the gear 33 is journalled. Coacting with the cam profile is a plate 49 mounted on one end of a lever 50 pivotally connected, by a pin 59 and slots, to an arm 51 of the bracket 38, the lever 50 being fulcrummed by a circular portion 52 thereon, which rests on a screw 53 on a pedestal 54, and held thereon by a spring 56 acting on the bracket 38. In operation, with a grinding-wheel 60 on the right, Fig. 3, the work is turned slowly by the hand wheel 31, so as to rotate the cam 36 anticlockwise; this rocks the lever 50 and so swings the body 16 to and from the grinding- wheel 60. Side relief may be produced by the axial movement effected by the pin 23 and plate 24.
