Abstract
589,328. Constructional toys. REED, W. T. V. March 14, 1945, No. 6406. [Class 132 (iii)]. A constructional toy consisting of elements adapted to be connected together to form machines, vehicles, bridges, &c., comprises as essential elements rods such as 1 and 2 provided with threaded longitudinal holes 3 at one or both ends, with or without one or more transverse threaded holes 4, 5, at intermediate positions to receive screw-threaded studs 7. In the model crane given as an example of a structure assembled with these elements, the arms of the jib are made up of two rods 1 with a rod 8 (shouldered by cutting away half of its cross section, the remaining half being provided with tapped holes 9 transversely through the flat surface and the uncut end having a tapped hole 3), all being connected together by threaded studs 7. The arms of the jib are connected by transverse rods 11 and 12 and by a short top rod on which is mounted loosely a pulley 10. The rods are attached to the jib arms by means of studs 7 screwed through the holes 9 (or transverse holes 4 and 5) into the ends of the rods. The rod 12 is connected to a plate 13 by discs 14 in the form of wheels each having a central bore to receive the rod 12 and provided with threaded holes 15 extending from the periphery to the bore. Each disc is secured to the rod 12 by a threaded stud 7 screwed into one of the threaded openings 15. The discs are each secured to the plate 13 by a threaded stud 7 one end of which is screwed into another opening 15 while the other end is passed through an opening in the plate 13 and screwed into a threaded opening in the face of a connecting block 16 in the shape of a cube or a triangular prism. Plates 13, 19, 20, &c., are secured together to form the cabin by studs 7 and connecting blocks 16, a nut 22 being screwed on to the outer end of each stud. Alternatively, the plates can be secured to the connecting blocks by threaded bolts 23. The lower edges of the triangular plates 20 at the ends of the top of the cabin can be secured to the side walls 19 by links 27, bolts 23 and nuts 22 screwed on to the ends of the bolts. The wheel 26 is provided with large lightening holes 31 intersected by the radial threaded holes' 15 and with additional lightening holes 32 of a diameter to receive the rods and threaded radial holes 33 extending from these holes to the periphery of the wheel. Wheel 26 is secured on to the projecting end of rod 29 by a threaded stud 7 screwed into one of the threaded openings 15 therein and a short rod is secured into one of the holes 32 by a stud 7 threaded into the associated opening 33 to form the handle 34 of the winch. The connecting blocks 16 and discs 14 may be of curved or angular shapes other than cubes or discs and some or all of the elements may be made of aluminium or other suitable light material.
