Abstract

589,003. Piston-rings. CROSS, R. C., and CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938), Ltd. March 14, 1945, No. 6399. [Class 122 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A split piston-ring in its free condition is in the form of a coil with overlapping extremities a and b and an internal diameter c smaller than the root diameter of the groove it is to surround. When sprung open over a piston or like, the ring is oval in shape with its free ends a and b spaced apart and oppositely disposed as in Fig. 2, and the surrounding cylinder compresses the ring into the groove when positioned. The ring is made by severing from the end of a helical coil of wire a length slightly greater than one convolution.
