588,860. Vehicle bodies. MORRISON, A. E., and MORRISON A. C. Feb. 1, 1944, No. 5138/45. Divided out of 588,821. [Classes 103 (ii) and 108 (i)] A chassisless framework for a battery operated electrically propelled vehicle comprises longitudinal members, cross-braced and adapted to carry the flooring, and a lower base structure of longitudinal and transverse angle section members arranged for supporting the batteries, the longitudinal and transverse members being suspended by uprights from the floor frame. As shown for a van body, the rigid box frame comprises a base structure including parallel main longitudinals or body runners 7, Fig. 4, front longitudinals 5, Fig. 1, in a lower plane below the driver's cab 6, and waist rail 12 extending around the sides and back. The part of the roof over the driver's cab is supported by bent members 35 attached to an angle 33 connecting the longitudinals 5 and the remainder of the roof is supported by vertical members 20, 19 connected to the waist rail 12, vertical members 17 connected to the waist rail and extending below the floor and having their free ends joined by a member 22 to form a recess 18 for battery boxes or spare wheels, the boxes being supported on transverse rails 40 connecting the members 17 on opposite sides of the body, additional supports for the rails being provided by channels 39 depending from the body runners 7, and rear vertical supports extending below the body runners and connected transversely at their free ends by members 21. The roof is supported on longitudinal and transverse cant rails 23, 24, the cant rails being longitudinally grooved, half round section members and the roof frame is cross-braced by transverse channels 25 of cambered form. The body runners 7 may comprise opposed channels 8, Fig. 6, separated by a plate 9 and the waist rail 12 is closed by a plate 14 and provided with an angle 15 which forms an abutment for one edge of the floor 16. The space 44 beneath the floor at the rear of the van may accommodate a drawer and one or more compartments may be provided in front of the driving seat or cab for baskets, parcels &c. and accessible through doors in the panelling.
