Abstract
588,144. Electromagnetic switches. STILWELL, W. E. Aug. 8, 1944, No. 15035. Convention date, Aug. 12, 1943. [Class 38 (v)] An overload protective device actuated by the increase in magnetic flux round an electrical conductor when the current through the conductor is increased, comprises a magnetic U-shaped strap 11 which receives the conductor 14 and is bent outwards to form poles 12, 13 and a magnetic extension 17 secured to pole 12 and pivotally carrying by means of a rivet 18, an armature 20, one end of which overlies pole 13. A spring 25, the tension of which is varied by screw 26, biasses the armature 20 anti-clockwise so that a contact 24 on the rear end is separated from a fixed contact 23a. A non-magnetic shim 21 spaces the armature from the extension 17. Upon overload, the armature 20 is attracted by pole 13 and moves clockwise with a snap action imparted by a roll-spring 27. Closure of the contacts energises a solenoid which operates a circuitbreaker. In a modification, the contact 24 is arranged on the free end of the armature, the contact 23a being correspondingly moved, so that the contacts are normally closed, and open upon overload, thus de-energising a solenoil and opening a circuit-breaker.
