Abstract
587,950. Salt bath furnaces. BRAYSHAW FURNACES & TOOLS, Ltd., BRAYSHAW, S. N., NEWMAN, F. C., and RUSHTON, F. Aug. 26, 1944, No. 16214. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group II] In a salt bath furnace a heating device is arranged in a run off passage at or near the bottom of the bath and is inactive during the operation of the furnace, being embedded or partially embedded in solidified salt to form a plug, but is put into action to melt the plug and allow the contents of the bath to escape. As shown, a salt bath A has an outlet a in which are fitted two electrodes D1 and D2 and a removable cover B on a run off spout a<1>. During normal running the outlet is closed by the electrodes and solidified salt but when it is desired to empty the bath the cover is removed and current is supplied to the electrodes from bus-bars d' and d' which melts the salt plug and allows the fused salt to run out into a receptacle which may be divided into smaller receptacles. The heating element may comprise electrodes, an electrical resistance, a bar of metal the end of which may be strongly heated or a hollow metallic tube through which may be passed hot gases, and it may be made automatically removable when the salt plug is melted. A loose fitting tapered plug may be inserted into the outlet to ensure solidification of the fused salts when they are first run into the bath.
