Abstract

587,307. Hygrometers. NEGRETTI, H. N., NEGRETTI, P. E., and GREGORY, H. SPENCER-. Oct. 31, 1945, No. 28950. [Class 97 (iii)] In a hygrometer using wet and dry thermometers, heat is supplied to the heat-sensitive part of the wet thermometer to compensate for the heat lost due to evaporation, the heat supplied being measured to determine the humidity of the air. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, a dry thermo-junction 5 and a wet thermo-junction 6 in circuit with a galvanometer 21 and arranged to give a null reading thereon when the junctions are at the same temperature, are located in a duct 11 through which air is drawn by a fan. The wet junction 6 is heated by a coil 10 connected in series with an ammeter 18 and regulating resistance 17 to regulate the heating current until the galvanometer 21 gives a zero reading. More than two junctions may be used in series with the galvanometer 21 as shown in Fig. 3 and arranged alternately as wet and dry junctions. A heating wire 9 is wound round all the wet junctions in turn and is in series with an ammeter and regulating resistance as in Fig. 2. The junctions are mounted on an insulating frame 22 which can be rocked intermittently to dip the wet junctions 6 into trough 24 of water. This latter may be fitted with a lid that can be automatically removed and replaced as frame 22 rocks.
