Abstract

586,156. Compound fabrics. WHITTLE & TURNER, Ltd., and WOODS, H. Oct. 10, 1943, No. 16996. [Class 140] [Also in Group IX] A multiply cloth has warp threads or weft threads or both of a thermoplastic artificial resin, such as polymerized methacrylate esters, polyvinylchloride or polyvinyl acetate, or other fusible threads, disposed in one outer ply only of the cloth, the other outer ply being entirely free from all fusible threads, and this cloth may be permanently united, at the face containing the thermoplastic threads, to any other cloth by simultaneous application of pressure and heat. As shown, 1, 2 represent the weft threads of two plies of the multiply cloth bound together by binder warps 3; 4 is the thermoplastic thread, which may be woven under less tension than the normal co-binding warp thread 5; and 6, 7 are the co-operating warp threads of the other ply. The threads 5, 6, and 7 are of natural fibres such as linen or cotton. In a preferred arrangement the one outer ply has twice as many ordinary warp threads 5 as fusible warp threads 4. If desired the multiply cloth alone, after weaving and finishing treatments such asbleaching and dyeing, may be set by heat, as by calendering, to produce a cloth suitable for collars.
