[Class 123 (iii)] [Also in Group XI] Steam for drying purposes, e.g., drying ink on sheets or webs of paper, dehydrating fruit &c. is superheated in a unit comprising a tubular casing a housing a rod-shaped electrical heating element f, steam from a transverse supply pipe b being led through a port c in the casing a into the space between said casing and heating element, and the superheated steam being discharged on to the material to be dried through a row of small holes s provided in the casing on the side opposite the pipe b. Preferably a number of units, e.g., three, are rigidly connected, parallel to one another, by one or more common steam supply pipes to form a grid-like structure which is mounted in an open rectangular box q by flanged spigots n secured to the box by screws r, and the steam supply pipes may be fitted with drain plugs e. Each heating element comprises a pair of open wire coils h which are enclosed in tubes g of porcelain &c. and are connected in series at their right-hand ends and provided at their left-hand ends with terminal rods l, the two tubes g themselves being enclosed in a copper tube k, and the complete element being mounted in one of the spigots n by a stuffing-box joint o.
