Abstract
585,822. Forging-machines. OMES, Ltd., and MORA, G. April 20, 1944, No. 7361. [Class 83 (iv)] In an electric upsetting-machine, the electrodes and ram cylinders are supported between guide bars upstanding from opposite ends of the base. Heads 17, 12 supported at opposite ends of the machine by the base 11 are integral with the upsetting cylinder 18 and abutment cylinder 13 respectively. Tie-rods 14, 15 extending between the heads act as guide bars for the ram heads 39, 42, the vice casting 22 and the work steady 61 if such be employed. A third rod in the horizontal plane of the rod 15 and the vertical plane of the rod 14 may be employed. Nuts 37, 38 on rods 35 carried by the head 17 determine the stroke of the ram 19 and similar nuts on rods 48 carried by the head 42 determine the stroke of the ram 16. The rods 48 pass freely through the head 12. The upper rod 14 is arranged to the rear, and the lower rod 15 forwardly of the machine to facilitate insertion and removal of the work. The connections to the lower vice electrode jaw 27 and upper jaw 30, movable by a hydraulic cylinder 28 are arranged at the rear of the machine as indicated in Fig. 2, and the transformer (not shown) is mounted adjacent their connections which are so arranged that the current paths to the two jaws are equal. The die 21 forms the other electrode and it has a terminal block 47 in the same plane and close to the connections for the jaws 27, 30. Current is thus fed symmetrically and the work is evenly heated. The ram 16 is controlled to recede as upsetting progresses to provide space for a head of the size required. The arrangement of the transformer connections is described in Specification 585,823, the vice jaws may have removable inserts as in Specification 579,474, and the steady may be constructed as in Specification 585,825. For upsetting at an intermediate point, two vices are employed, and these form the respective ends of the secondary.
