Abstract
1,196,761. Electrode supporting device. KAISER ALUMINIUM & CHEMICAL CORP. May 24, 1967 [July 21, 1966], No.24245/67. Heading C7B In an electrolytic cell for the production of aluminium, during position adjustment of the cell anode bus bar which is mounted on anode -supporting superstructure of the cell, the cell anodes are supported and current flow maintained thereto by means of auxiliary apparatus comprising (a) an elongated frame member; (b) an auxiliary anode bus bar mounted on the frame member and substantially parallel to the anode bus bar of the cell; (c) a plurality of clamp members by means of which the anode rods (and hence the anodes) are supported and are electrically connected to the auxiliary anode bus bar; and (d) flexible leads attached to each end of the auxiliary anode bus bar, the free ends of which are provided with clamp members for connection to the cell anode bus bar, so that current from the anode bus bar flows into the cell via the auxiliary anode bus bar. In the embodiment shown the auxiliary apparatus is of inverted U-shape having two parallel auxiliary anode bus bars 28 for use with a cell having two anode bus bars 12, the apparatus being positioned above and surrounding the cell superstructure 10. As shown to the left of the dotted line anode rod 18 has clamped thereto clamp member 30 which is in electrical contact with the adjacent auxiliary anode bus bar 28 via flexible conductors 34, and is supported from the frame member 24 via parts 62, 56, 58 and 32. As shown to the right of the dotted line the auxiliary anode bus bar 28 is electrically connected to the anode bus bar 12 by flexible leads 36 connected to the jaws of the clamp 38 via rigid leads 96, 98 respectively, the clamp 38 being clamped upon a pad 46 attached to the anode bus bar 12. The clamp 38 is operated by means of piston 42 and cylinder 44.
