Abstract

1,147,392. Electrolytic reduction cells. KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORP. Aug. 5, 1966 [Aug.9, 1965, No.35271/66. Heading C7B. In an electrolytic reduction cell, e.g. for the reduction of alumina, comprising a lining defining a cavity for containing the electrolyte and a prebaked anode disposed therein, a means is provided for supporting and vertically adjusting the position of the anode and connecting it to the power source, which comprises an electrical connection plate 24, one end of which is connected to an anode bus-bar 22 via a flexible bus conductor 23, the other end of which passes through a plate 31 which is held in a vertical plane and slidably adjustable in said plane, said end being held with vertical pressure in current transmitting contact with the upper portion of the metal conductor bar 18, to the lower end of which is attached the pre-baked anode. In the form shown the connection plate 24 is formed with two legs 34 at the end distant from the busbar 22, the conductor bar 18 is T-shaped and the horizontal members 36 thereof are respectively positioned above the legs 34 and vertical pressure is provided thereagainst by clamp 30. The slide mechanism 26 comprises a plate 31, slidable between rails 32 which are attached to the superstructure of the cell, and supported by a jack mechanism 27 from beam 44 by means of which the slide plate 31 may be raised or lowered. In alternative embodiments described the upper portion of the conductor bar 18 may be hook-shaped, with the extremity of the hook being horizontal and resting above the legs 34, Figs.6, 7 (not shown); the legs 34 may lie in a vertical plane extending downwards and being downwardly converging, the upper portion of the conductor bar being wedgeshaped so as to rest between and above the legs 34 and to bear downwardly thereupon Figs. 4, 5 (not shown); or the downwardly extending legs 34 may be pivotally attached to the plate 31 such that if the upper part of the conductor bar 18 which is positioned between the legs 34 is the same shape as the rest of the bar, it will be retained there by friction, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown).
