Abstract

922,290. Anode current-conducting frames and supporting jigs for aluminium reduction cells. ALUMINIUM-INDUSTRIE-A.G. Nov. 28, 1961 [Dec. 23, 1960], No. 42503/61. Class 41. A reduction cell for the electrolytic production of aluminium from a fused bath contained in a rectangular pot, has a horizontally mounted anode current-conducting frame and supporting jig from which carbon anodes are suspended in the melt by vertically movable current-conducting rods arranged in rows down the longitudinal axis of the cell. The anode rods in each row are clamped to a vertically movable horizontal contact bar parallel to and outside the conducting frame and suspended from an overhead jig arrangement. The jig or supporting framework is itself supported by the currentconducting frame. The contact bars are connected to the conducting frame by flexible conductors, and the motor 23 and the mechanisms for moving the girders 10 are electrically insulated from the fixed current conducting frame but no other parts are. The cell comprises a pot with carbon bottom and anode superstructure, shown in end elevation, and consisting of carbon anodes 2, and fixed current-conducting frame 6 comprising two beams 6 spanning the length of the pot and welded to the outer faces of the vertical supporting conductors 5 positioned at each end of the cell and mounted on pedestals 8. The busbars 4 connect the cathode base of one cell to the vertical anode conductors of the next cell. The anodes 2, arranged in pairs, are carried from anode rods 9 which are clamped to horizontal contact bars 7 of aluminium supported by girder section 10, which latter unit is supported at each end by a jack 21 moving through gearing 22 which is driven by motor 23 through cross-shafts 25. The jig or supporting framework comprises members 16, 18 and 19. The jacks 21 are operated to raise and lower the anode rods by vertical movement of contact bars 7. Flexible conductors 12 connect the anode current-carrying frame to the contact bars 7. The fixed current-conducting frame is preferably composed of an aluminium-iron alloy containing from 1.8-2.0% iron.
