Abstract

<PICT:1092898/C6-C7/1> In an electrolytic reduction cell, e.g. for producing aluminium, comprising a supporting shell 20 encasing a lining for containing an electrolyte and one or more anodes 24 suspended within the electrolyte and supported from a superstructure 42 mounted on the shell, the opposite ends of the superstructure being supported on corresponding opposite parts of the shell, one end of the superstructure is supported by parallel legs 50 each pivotally connected both to the shell and the superstructure to permit relative movement between them resulting from thermal expansion and contraction. As shown the anodes are normally clamped to a bus-bar 30 which can be moved vertically by a pneumatic motor 40. When the bus-bar 30 is in its lowest position the anodes are clamped to members 44 of the superstructure 42 while the bus-bar is raised to its highest position. As shown legs 48 are rigidly secured to the shell 20 but may be pivotally connected to it in the same ways as legs 50.
