Abstract

569,996. Heating by passage of current. ARON, H. Nov. 1, 1943, No. 18019. [Class 39 (iii)] Electrodes for machines for heating billets by passage of current therethrough comprise an anvil 57, the back of which is clamped against the face of an anvilholding block 50 having an aperture 173 in its face closed by the back of the anvil, cooling liquid being circulated through passages in the block 50 through the aperture into direct contact with the back of the anvil. The anvil 57 consists of a cylindrical block of metal with a circumferential groove 59 engaged by readily releasable dogs 60 fastened by set screws 160 in a recess 58 on the block 50. The anvil may be of copper and have a conical recess in its working face carrying a plug 142 of tungsten alloy to support the billet 133. The billet heater, described in Specification 569,120, [Group XXII], comprises an iron shelf 42 supporting tie bars 45, 46 and is insulated by bushes 51 and washers 52 from the bronze anvil-holding block 50 mounted thereon and supported centrally by a boss 55 and insulating washer 56. Water is fed at 67 to a plug 167 in the block 50 and passes by a jet 68 into a recess 69 in the anvil 57, passing thence to a central chamber 168, through a port 169 to a lateral chamber 170 and through a passage 171 to a second lateral chamber 172 in the block 50, whence the water is drawn off by an outlet 66 in a cover plate 65 on the block 50. , An upper movable anvil-holding block 70 similarly constructed slides on the bars 45, 46. Bushes 72, which may be made in two parts, have flanges 73 and are attached by screws 74 to the block 70, which is raised and lowered by a hydraulic ram 87 attached by screws 167 to a cylinder casting 75 on the block. Washers 158 are placed at the ends of spigots 157 on the backs of the anvil, which fits in recesses in the anvil block. The ends of secondary windings of a transformer are connected to screws 62 in the rear faces of the upper and lower anvil-holding blocks.
