Abstract

1,134,195. Rollers. MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO K.K. 5 April, 1966 [9 April, 1965], No. 15204/66. Heading F2U. [Also in Division C7] A conductor roll for supplying current to a metal member during continuous electrolytic treatment, e.g. for cleaning, pickling or plating steel strip, comprises a shell 8 of electroformed high purity copper, a pair of main shafts 1, 1a and a boss 3 fixed to each of the main shafts for supporting the shell concentrically with the shafts, the outer surface of the shell being plated with a layer 9 of an abrasion- and corrosionresistant metal e.g. nickel or hard chromium. The bosses 3 and integrally cast hubs 4 of copper alloy and additional supporting copper discs 6 are secured within the copper shell, when this has been machined to size, by a shrinkage fit, e.g. by heating the shell to not more than 200‹ C. or by chilling the bosses and discs, this being preferred to a force fit connection. The main shafts to which the bosses 3 and hubs 4 are soldered at 5 are hollow and are provided with access ports 10, 10a to the interior of the shell, and the discs 6 are apertured at 7 so that cooling water may be passed through the complete roller. The outer layer of nickel or chromium may be extended to cover the ends of the roller and part of the hubs 4. Alternatively to ensure liquid-tightness of the roller, packing glands 12 may be bolted over the ends of the roller or the bosses 3 may be soldered or brazed to the shell.
