Abstract

Ethylene cyanohydrin is stabilised by the addition of a minor but sufficient proportion of an acid to inhibit deterioration of the cyanohydrin, for example, hydrochloric, phosphoric, boric, nitric, sulphuric, carbonic, acetic, acrylic, tannic, oxalic, benzoic or phthalic acid. The quantity of acid employed is of the order of 0.01 per cent to 1.0 per cent by weight. Tables are given showing the stabilising effect of a number of the above-mentioned acids. Ethylene cyanohydrin so stabilised may be stored for long periods in steel or glass containers without substantial discolouration or decrease in purity.
