Abstract

A phosphonic acid containing at least two phosphorus atoms is produced by acylating phosphorous acid at 50 DEG to 200 DEG C. with a halide or anhydride of (a) a polycarboxylic acid, (b) an unsaturated carboxylic acid or (c) a monocarboxylic acid having at least seven carbon atoms in the molecule. A halide or anhydride of a dicarboxylic acid may be used in an amount of 0.25 to 1 mol. per mol. of phosphorous acid. The monocarboxylic acid may be aromatic, or an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing at least eight carbon atoms in the molecule, used in an amount of 1/2 to 2 mol. per mol. of phosphorous acid. The composition of the phosphonic acids are unknown, but they possess surface active properties, particularly when a long chain carbon residue is present. Numerous examples of acids which may be used as their halides or anhydrides are given.
