Abstract

585,317. Propelling aircraft. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Feb. 20, 1945, No. 4284. Convention date, July 1, 1944. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXVII] In a cooling arrangement of an aircraft engine in which the flow of cooling air through a cowl 15 surrounding the engine is assisted by a fan 25, means is provided for by-passing some of the air when less cooling is required so as to maintain constant the flow of air past the fan. These means may comprise flaps 30 allowing air to be drawn in behind the engine. If the fan is in front of the engine the flaps may also be in front and allow some air to escape. Alternatively an auxiliary cowl may be placed inside the cowl 15 and arranged with flaps at the front and rear ends to by-pass part of the air through an annular space between the cowls. Exit flaps 20 are also provided. The flaps may be operated manually, or automatically in accordance with altitude.
