536,189. Testing engines and airscrews. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd., YOUNG, H. R., PARAVICINI, T. P. DE., and WALKER, G. E. L. April 6, 1940, No. 6239. [Class 4] For testing an engine and airscrew, the unit, with the engine properly, cowled is mounted in a closed circuit wind-tunnel having means for exhausting the engine exhaust gases and some of the cooling air and for replacing the air thus lost, the cross section of the tunnel being circular in the plane of the airscrew which circulates the air at a speed comparable to that obtaining in flight. An engine nacelle 2 and airscrew 3 are axially adjustable in a tapered circular part 5 of a chamber having guide vanes 9 at the corners. Cooling air and exhaust gases are discharged through a divergent funnel 6, coaxial with the engine, and the air thus lost is replaced through gills 7 arranged at a position of low pressure. The return passage 10 is of larger area than.the working passage 5 and may be of rectangular cross section.
