Abstract

Rubber hydrochloride having a low permeability to moisture vapour is obtained by the hydrochlorination of rubber from latex which has been substantially freed from its protein content. A preferred method comprises treating the latex with alkali to hydrolyze the protein matter and then creaming it several times to hydrolyze the solubilized foreign matter. The rubber obtained from such latex may be hydrochlorinated in the normal way and then cast into films 0.0004 to 0.004 of an inch thick, which may be used as a wrapping material or formed into a bag the edges of which may be heat sealed.
