Abstract

<PICT:0584719/IV/1> <PICT:0584719/IV/2> <PICT:0584719/IV/3> A machine for making artificial filaments comprises a spinning bath compartment extending longitudinally of the machine, one or more spinning stations each comprising a filament-collecting device and a spinneret adapted to be immersed in the bath, and means for withdrawing the filaments from the spinneret through the bath obliquely to its length and for conducting them to the collecting device, comprising a plurality of rotary members, each of which is arranged with its axis of rotation substantially at right angles to the directions of approach and departure of the filaments with respect thereto. One of the rotary members may be arranged to withdraw the filaments from the spinneret through the bath obliquely to its length and another rotary member may be arranged to receive the filaments from the first member and to direct them on their way to the collecting device. As shown in Fig. 3, a bundle of filaments 2 proceeds obliquely from spinneret 3 to a drawing rotor 4 about which it is wrapped a few times before proceeding to rotor 6. The filaments then pass vertically downward through funnel guide 8 to a further treatment station or to a collecting device. The drawing and guiding members are arranged so that the courses of the filaments approaching and departing from each of the rollers are substantially coplanar with the course of travel about the respective roller and substantially at right angles to the axis of the roller. Lapping is effected by means of a guide roller 5 set at a slight angle to the axis of the drawing member as shown in Fig. 3, the angle being small so that no slippage occurs. Where the total denier of the bundle of filaments is very large or where it is desired to displace the successive laps, a guiding roller 9 as shown in Fig. 4, is used, this roller being about the same size as the drawing roller 10 in order that substantially coplanar relation may hold. Alternatively, the guide means shown in Fig. 7 may be used. The arrangement of roller may be adapted for stretching during spinning, or the filaments may be released between rotors 4 and 6. The filaments may be treated with liquids or vapours while passing from one rotor to the next.
