[Classes 51 (i), 51 (ii) and 55 (i)] Within the mouthpiece 2 of the outlet hopper of the liquid-sealed closure for vertical retorts or furnaces of the parent Specification a controlling plate or flap 33 is secured to a shaft 34 with an operating lever which can be anchored by hook and chain in a position such that an empty space 42 is provided beneath the plate as coke descends over it, and when the closure member 3 is moved into its closed position the coke piling up on the supporting plate 25 is pushed into this space thereby offering little resistance to movement of the closure member. The operation of repeatedly discharging and "pinching-off" portions of the initial coke charge used for starting up a retort after scurfing and tending to slip over the coke extractor is effected with plate 33 in the position shown; when newly made coke begins to be discharged and is under satisfactory control of the coke extractor gear, the plate is lowered against the mouthpiece wall to offer no obstruction.
