Abstract

In the laundering of cellulosic textile articles of the class requiring frequent laundering, wherein the articles are washed by customary methods, they are thereafter rinsed in an aqueous bath containing a very small proportion of a substantive blue fluorescent substance. Advantageously, the aqueous bath contains not more than 0.05 per cent and suitably between 0.01 per cent and 0.001 per cent of the blue fluorescent substance calculated on the weight of the articles to be rinsed. The blue fluorescent substance is preferably one showing an absorption maximum at about 3400 to 3700 Angstrom and it may be used in any of the rinses following the wash. Specified substances are a di-benzoylaminostilbene-sulphonic acid or a nuclear substitution derivative thereof or a salt of these acids, e.g. a 4 : 41-di-benzoylaminostilbene-2 : 21-disulphonic acid or a nuclear substitution derivative thereof or a salt of these acids; 4 : 41-di-p-aminobenzoylamino-stilbene-2 : 21-disulphonic acid or a salt thereof; sodium 4 : 41-di-p-methylbenzoylamino-stilbene-2 : 21-disulphonate; the corresponding 3 : 31-disulphonates and 2 : 21-6 : 61-tetrasulphonates; the symmetrical urea derived from sodium 4-amino-41 - benzoylaminostilbene - 2 : 21 - disulphonate; dibenzyl derivatives such as sodium 4 : 41-dibenzoyl-aminodibenzyl - 2 : 21 - disulphonate; benzidine derivatives such as sodium-dibenzoylbenzidine - 3 : 31 - dicarboxylate; and the symmetrical urea derived from sodium-4-amino-41-benzoylaminostilbene - 2 : 21 - disulphonate. In an example, a mixed batch of towels, tablecloths, pillow-cases and napkins is washed with soap in the usual way, rinsed twice in clean water and then given a final rinse in water containing in three tests respectively 0.0005, 0.001 and 0.004 per cent (calculated upon the water=7 gallons) of the sodium salt of 4 : 41-di-p-aminobenzoylaminostilbene-2 : 21 - disulphonic acid.
