Abstract
583,774. Cooling granular materials. BLAKEBOROUGH, R. A., and BERRY, H. Dec. 4, 1944, No. 24146. [Class 64 (ii)] An apparatus for cooling moulding sand in a foundry comprises a series of vertically-spaced hollow horizontal platforms a supported by pillars b, and through which passes a central shaft d driven by the reduction gearing d'. Above each platform and connected to the rotating shaft d are radial arms e each having a number of depending bladed projections f arranged on the arms in such a manner that the sand on alternate platforms is urged inwardly and outwardly respectively, to fall on to the platform below, either through the central annulus or over the periphery, as the case may be. Water or other liquid coolant passes upwardly through the platforms as indicated by the line c on the figure, the sand falling on to the top tray from the chute g, passing on a zig-zag path to the bottom tray, and so out into the chute h. The trays may be conical in shape, alternate trays sloping inwards and outwards, and the whole apparatus may be enclosed in a cylindrical casing in which case a current of cooling air may be passed upwardly through the apparatus. Provision for introducing other materials into the sand' at any stage of the operation for re-conditioning, may be made.
