716,594. Centrifugal machines. MAATSCHAPPIJ VOOR KOLENBEWERKING STAMICARBON N.V. Nov. 28, 1952 [Nov. 30, 1951; Sept. 26, 1952], No. 30275/52. Class 23 [Also in Group XIX] In the thickening of a suspension or emulsion, the thickened liquid, discharged as a conical sheet from a hydro-cyclone 14, is collected in a vessel 20 if the density and hence the viscosity falls below a predetermined value, or is collected in a vessel 18 if the density is above the value. As shown in Fig. 2 the vessel 20 is a trough and the vessel 18, which is cylindrical and co-axial with the cyclone, delivers to a further trough. The distance between the outlet 17 and the mouths of the vessels may be adjustable as described in Specification 716,592. Liquid collected in the trough 20 may be returned to the cyclone. More than one cyclone may deliver to the troughs. In a modification (Fig. 3 not shown), a circular rod which may be rotary extends along the axis of the cyclone to form an annular outlet. In the thickening plant shown in Fig. 4, hydro cyclones 25 ... 27 arranged in series are supplied with suspension from a pipe 40. The thickened discharge from the cyclone 25 is removed from the plant by a pipe 32 if of the required density, but is recycled by the pipe 33 if below the required density.
