Abstract

583,409. Aerials. EGGLETON, C. W. May 7, 1945, No. 11515. [Class 40 (v)] A flexible rod aerial intended for mounting on vehicles consists of a plurality of wires and is tapered so that its flexibility decreases from its upper to its lower end. An aerial, Fig. 1, comprises a number of steel wires 10 which are of different lengths so that the cross-sectional area of the aerial decreases towards its upper end. The whole is surrounded by an insulating sheath 11 of uniform thickness. A circular flange 12 for fixing the aerial to the vehicle is formed integrally with the sheath 11-and is provided with fixing holes 13. The wires are secured to a sleeve 15 to which the lead 16 from the aerial is connected. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 8 (not shown), an aerial of which the wires 10 are all of the same length has a sheath 11 which decreases in thickness towards the upper end of the aerial. The flange 12 is formed separately from,the sheath and bolts protruding from it are used for fixing. The wires 10 are secured by a threaded member which engages a corresponding member in the flange 12 so that the aerial may be removed from its mounting. Alternatively, the aerial may terminate in a plug which fits a corresponding socket in the flange.
