Abstract

582,745. Liquid meters. BECK & CO., Ltd., and SOAR, H. G. May 11, 1944, No. 8999. [Class 69 (ii)] In a fluid meter comprising two spaced pairs of interconnected pistons 4, 4a and 5, 5a, Fig. 3, working in cylinders 7, 7a and 8, 8a, a rotary cylindrical valve 11 located between the pairs of cylinders and coupled to the piston-rods 6, 6a is actuated at the required times to admit fluid to one cylinder, e.g. of a pair, to the outer side of the piston 4, and to the other cylinder 7a on the inner side of the piston 4a, and is also actuated to discharge fluid from one cylinder 8 of the other pair on the outer side of the piston 5 and from the cylinder 8a of the second pair on the inner side of the piston 5a so that each pair of pistons cause four displacements of the cylinders for each revolution of the valve. Chambers 9, 9a provide communication between the outer and inner sides of the pistons 4, 4a and 5, 5a respectively, and chambers 10, 10a connect the inner and outer sides of pistons 4, 4a and 5, 5a respectively. Members 12, 12a are cross-over ports connecting valve ports 14, 14b with the chambers 10, 10a respectively. The valve 11 which is geared to a suitable indicating mechanism rotates within a casing 13, Fig. 1, and is geared to the piston-rods 6, 6a through gearing 15, which latter meshes with gears 16, 17 on shafts 18 of crank assemblies, the lower end 19 of which form crank housings 19a for driving arms 20. Each crank housing 19a is arranged accentrically to the shaft 18 to afford stroke variation. The gearing is arranged so that when one pair of pistons is at the end of the stroke the other is at the centre. In operation, when fluid from the meter inlet 2 passes through the valve 11 and port 14 to the crossover port 12 and thence to the space 10 to the appropriate sides of the pistons 4, 4a, at the same time fluid is discharged from the other sides of the pistons 4, 4a by space 9, a port 14a to the meter outlet. Similarly, whilst fluid is being discharged from the space 9a in communication with the other pair of pistons, by way of a port 14c, fluid enters the space 10a by way of port 14b and cross-over port 12a.
