Abstract
Acrylonitrile or a methyl or ethyl a -substituted acrylonitrile is condensed with a polyhydric alcohol and the resulting nitrile reduced with hydrogen to give an amino ether having the general formula NH2.CH2C(X)H.CH2OR, where X is hydrogen, or a methyl or ethyl radical, and R is an aliphatic group which may contain an amino, hydroxy or ether group, and except for ether-oxygen, hydroxyl-oxygen and amine-nitrogen atoms is composed entirely of carbon and hydrogen atoms. The condensation is carried out with the aid of an alkaline catalyst such as sodium, sodium alcoholate or a quaternary ammoniumhydroxide. In examples, 2 - (cyanethoxy) - 21 - hydroxyethylether and bis-(cyanoethoxy) ethylether are prepared by reacting diethyleneglycol with one and two mols. of acrylonitrile respectively; the products are catalytically reduced with hydrogen. The condensation of glycerol with one, two and three mols. of acrylonitrile, and 2 : 3-butanediol and 2-methyl-2 : 4-pentanediol with one and two mols. of acrylonitrile is described and the reduction of the resulting nitriles.
