Abstract
Compounds of the formula R(R1)C(CHR2)n(CN)2 where R is an aryl group which may carry substituents not interfering with the reaction, R1 is an esterified carboxyl group, R2 is hydrogen or an alkyl group and n is 1 or 2, are prepared by condensing an a or b -halogenalkyl cyanide with an arylacetonitrile R(R1)C(CN)H in presence of an alkaline condensing agent capable of forming an alkali metal derivative of the arylacetonitrile, e.g. sodium, sodamide or an alkali metal alcoholate. Catalytic hydrogenation causes intramolecular condensation with elimination of ammonia to form heterocyclic bases <FORM:0564741/IV/1> Examples are given of the preparation of (1) a -phenyl-a -carbethoxy glutaric acid nitrile from ethyl phenylcyanoacetate and b -chlorpropionitrile, and hydrogenation to 3-phenyl-3-carbethoxypiperidine which forms a solid nitroso derivative; (2) a -phenyl-a -carbethoxy succinic acid dinitrile which is hydrogenated to ethyl 3-phenyl-pyrrolidine-3-carboxylate.
