Abstract
#-Phenylacrylic nitriles of the general formula (X is a substituent n is- 0, 1, 2 or 3 R 1 is an optionally substituted' phenyl or naphthyl group, an aromatic-heterocyclic radical which is linked-via a carbon atom of the heteroring to the [alpha]-carbon atom of the #-phenylacrylonitrile radical, or a carboxyl group R is an alkyl group, or -SO 2 NR 2 R 3 where R 2 and R 3 areeach alkyl groups or together with the nitrogen atom form a 6-membered ring or -SO 3 Z, where Z is hydrogen or a metal atom or -CH 2 OR 4 , where R 4 is alkyl, aryl or aralkyl with the proviso: that when n is 0 and R is C 1-4 alkyl, R 1 cannot be an optionally substituted phenyl group) may be prepared by treating a toluene derivative of general formula firstly with an alkali metal polysulphide in aqueous alkaline media at 50-120 C., and subsequently (without intermediate isolation), with a nitrile R 5 CH 2 CN, where R 5 is the same as R 1 or is a carboxamide or carboxylic ester group, followed by optional acidification and, when R 5 is amide or ester, by conversion to the corresponding carboxylic acid.
